Regression

The link between regression and correlation

The link between regression and correlation

  • The slope can also be written in terms of the correlation coefficient and the standard deviations: b = r × (sy ÷ sx), where sx and sy are the standard deviations of x and y.
  • This shows that the slope depends on the strength of the correlation and on the units used to measure the data.
  • If r = 0, the slope equals zero. The regression line is then horizontal, and x cannot help us predict y.
