Conditional Probability and Independent Events

The multiplication rule

The multiplication rule

  • From the definition of conditional probability we get the multiplication rule:

P(A ∩ B) = P(B) × P(A | B) = P(A) × P(B | A)

  • This rule is useful in problems that happen in stages, such as drawing from a bag without replacement.
  • A tree diagram helps to show the probabilities at each stage.
  • We multiply the probabilities along each branch.
