Lesson summary

Lesson summary

  • Expectation μ = Σ (x × f(x)), the long-run average of the variable.
  • Variance σ² = Σ (x² × f(x)) − μ², and standard deviation: σ = √σ².
  • If Y = aX + b, then E(Y) = a E(X) + b and Var(Y) = a² Var(X).
  • A positive expectation in a game means an expected gain for the player, and a negative expectation means an expected gain for the organiser.
