Cambridge IGCSE Biology (0610 & 0970) Comprehensive Revision Master Guide: Prepared by Dr. Khaled Dabour and DABOURHUB Academy for international students preparing for Cambridge Assessment International Education (CAIE) examinations.
1. Syllabus Overview & Assessment Objectives (AO1, AO2, AO3)
The Cambridge IGCSE Biology 0610 curriculum assesses students across three fundamental competencies:
- AO1 (Knowledge with Understanding – 50%): Scientific phenomena, facts, laws, definitions, concepts, and scientific vocabulary (e.g. active transport, diffusion, osmosis, homeostasis).
- AO2 (Handling Information and Problem Solving – 30%): Translating information from one form to another, manipulating numerical data, identifying patterns, and drawing reasoned conclusions.
- AO3 (Experimental Skills and Investigations – 20%): Planning investigations, recording observations, identifying variables, evaluating methods, and suggesting improvements.
2. Core Units Breakdown (Units 1 to 21)
Characteristics & Classification of Living Organisms (MRS GREN)
Every living organism exhibits seven vital characteristics: Movement, Respiration, Sensitivity, Growth, Reproduction, Excretion, and Nutrition. Organisms are classified using binomial nomenclature (Genus species) into five kingdoms: Animals, Plants, Fungi, Protoctists, and Prokaryotes.
Enzymes, Biological Molecules & Transport Systems
Enzymes are biological catalysts made of protein that speed up metabolic reactions without being consumed. They work via the lock-and-key model where substrate molecules fit into the enzyme’s active site. Environmental factors such as temperature and pH affect enzyme activity; excessive heat denatures enzymes by permanently altering their tertiary protein structure and active site conformation.
Plant Biology: Photosynthesis, Transpiration & Translocation
Photosynthesis is the fundamental process by which green plants synthesize carbohydrates from carbon dioxide and water using light energy absorbed by chlorophyll:
6CO₂ + 6H₂O ➔ C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂ (in the presence of light and chlorophyll)
Water moves up through xylem vessels via transpiration pull, driven by evaporation of water vapor from the surfaces of mesophyll cells through stomata.
3. Key Formulas & Calculations in IGCSE Biology
One of the most frequently tested mathematical skills is the magnification triangle formula:
| Concept | Formula | Units / Key Rule |
|---|---|---|
| Magnification | Magnification (M) = Image Size (I) ÷ Actual Size (A) | Ensure both I and A have identical units (convert mm to µm by × 1000) |
| Percentage Change in Mass | % Change = [(Final Mass – Initial Mass) ÷ Initial Mass] × 100 | Allows comparison between tissues with different starting masses |
4. Paper 6 Alternative to Practical Investigation Essentials
- Controlled Variables: When investigating factors such as temperature or light, always state at least two controlled variables (e.g. volume of solution using measuring cylinder, concentration, surface area of tissue).
- Biological Drawings: Use a sharp HB pencil, draw clear unbroken single lines, no shading or cross-hatching, include a scale bar, and label lines must touch the feature without crossing other lines.
- Common Experimental Errors: Blotted surface liquid on potato cylinders, parallax error when reading meniscus at eye level, and heat loss to surroundings.
