Wave Properties — American System Physics Revision Notes & Topical Questions
10 min read 7 parts Lesson 4 of 5 1 quiz
Distinguish transverse and longitudinal waves with examples.Wave speed = frequency × wavelengthv = fλ (m/s = Hz × m).Frequency and periodf = 1/T, so also v = λ/T.Speed = distance ÷ timev = d/t, useful for timing a pulse.Waves transfer energy, not matter; each particle only oscill…
- Two kinds of graph are used
- Amplitude is related to the energy carried
- A water wave has frequency 2.5 Hz and wavelength 0.80 m. What is its speed?
- Mechanical wave
- Transverse wave
- Wavelength (λ)

Part 3 of 7Essential knowledge
Part 4 of 7Process & sequence
How a longitudinal wave travels along a slinkywrite these steps in this order; each step is a marking point.
Part 5 of 7Worked examples
- v = fλ = 2.5 Hz × 0.80 m = 2.0 m/s.What the symbols mean: v = wave speed (m s−1) · f = frequency (Hz) · λ = wavelength (m)
- λ = v/f = 3.00 × 108 m/s ÷ 98.0 × 106 Hz = 3.06 m (3 s.f.).
- f = v/λ = 1.2 ÷ 0.60 = 2.0 Hz (unchanged). New λ = v/f = 0.90 m/s ÷ 2.0 Hz = 0.45 m.
Part 6 of 7Summary
Part 7 of 7Compare: Compare
| Property | Transverse | Longitudinal |
|---|---|---|
| Direction of vibration | Perpendicular to energy transfer | Parallel to energy transfer |
| Features | Crests and troughs | Compressions and rarefactions |
| Wavelength measured | Crest to next crest | Compression to next compression |
| Examples | Light and all EM waves, ripples, string waves, S-waves | Sound, ultrasound, P-waves, push on a slinky |
| Travel in vacuum? | EM waves yes; mechanical transverse no | No (sound needs a medium) |
| Quantity | Set by | Changes on entering a new medium? |
|---|---|---|
| Frequency f | The source | No |
| Speed v | The medium | Yes |
| Wavelength λ | Both (λ = v/f) | Yes, in proportion to v |

- C. Sound in air
- D. An S-wave
Show answer
C. Sound is a pressure wave with compressions and rarefactions.
Q2. A wave has v = 340 m/s and f = 170 Hz. Its wavelength is
- A. 0.5 m
- B. 2.0 m
- C. 510 m
- D. 57 800 m
Show answer

Q3. When a wave enters a new medium, which quantity stays the same?
- A. Speed
- B. Wavelength
- C. Frequency
- D. Direction always
Show answer
C. Frequency is fixed by the source.
Q4. What do waves transfer?
- A. Matter only
- B. Energy without matter
- C. Both energy and matter
- D. Neither
Show answer
B. Particles oscillate in place; energy moves on.
Q5. On a displacement–time graph, the time between adjacent peaks is the
- A. Wavelength
- B. Amplitude
- C. Period
- D. Speed
Show answer
C. A time axis gives period, not wavelength.
Q6. A wave has period 0.25 s. Its frequency is
- A. 0.25 Hz
- B. 2.5 Hz
- C. 4.0 Hz
- D. 25 Hz
Show answer
