Electric Forces

Common mistakes

Common mistakes

  • Believing that protons move during rubbing. Only electrons move.
  • Believing that a charged object always attracts everything. A neutral object is attracted to it by induction.
  • Calculating charge from the total number of electrons instead of the number of extra or missing electrons.
  • Confusing positive and negative charge when rubbing. An object that gains electrons becomes negative; one that loses electrons becomes positive.
