General Characteristics of Living Organisms

Living and non-living things

Living and non-living things

  1. Some non-living things resemble living organisms in certain visible features
  2. but the difference appears when all the characteristics are examined:
  • Most living organisms are made of cells. Rocks, cars and iron are not made of cells.
  • Living organisms feed, breathe and reproduce. Non-living things do not.
  • Fire may seem to move, grow and need oxygen, but it is not made of cells, does not feed and does not reproduce, so it is not a living organism.
  • Crystals can grow in a solution, but they do not respire and do not respond to stimuli like living organisms, and they are not made of cells.
