General Characteristics of Living Organisms

Common mistakes

Common mistakes

  • Confusing movement with sensitivity. Movement is changing place or position; sensitivity is responding to a stimulus.
  • Believing that every living organism moves from one place to another. A plant is living but does not move from place to place; it moves only by changing the direction of its parts.
  • Thinking that growth means only an increase in size. Growth is an increase in the number and size of cells.
  • Forgetting that reproduction is necessary for the survival of the species, not of the individual.
