Order of operations
Order of operations
We perform operations on real numbers in the usual order→brackets first, then powers and roots, then multiplication and division from left to right, and finally addition and subtraction from left to right. The properties of commutation, association and distribution may be used without changing the value of the expression.
Key points
Commutativea + b = b + a and a × b = b × a.
Associative(a + b) + c = a + (b + c).
Distributivea × (b + c) = a × b + a × c.
