Operations on Real Numbers

Removing a root from the denominator

Removing a root from the denominator

  • We write the expression so that the denominator contains no root.
  • If the denominator is √a, we multiply the numerator and the denominator by √a.
  • If the denominator has the form (√a − √b), we multiply by its conjugate (√a + √b), because (√a − √b)(√a + √b) = a − b.
