Square and Cube Root Laws

The cube root

The cube root

  • The cube root of a number a is the number which, when cubed, gives a.
  • It is written 3√a.
  • Unlike the square root, the cube root is defined for negative numbers too, because the cube of a negative number is negative:
  1. 3√(a³) = a. For example, 3√8 = 2, because 23 = 8.
  2. 3√(−8) = −2, because (−2)3 = −8.
  3. 3√(8 ÷ 27) = 2 ÷ 3, because (2 ÷ 3)3 = 8 ÷ 27.
