Measures of Central Tendency

Mean, median and mode

Mean, median and mode

  • If the values are x1, x2, …, xn, then the mean = sum of the values ÷ n.
  • To find the median, arrange the values in increasing order:
  • If the number of values is odd, the median is the value exactly in the middle.
  • If the number of values is even, the median is the mean of the two values in the middle.
  • The mode is the most frequent value.
  • A set may have no mode if all its values occur equally often, and it may have more than one mode.
