Explanation
Question bank
3.3 Magnetic force on a current-carrying wire
3.3 Magnetic force on a current-carrying wire
If a wire carrying current is placed in another magnetic field, such as that of a magnet, what happens?
Activity.
Two parallel copper rails are connected to a battery and switch.
A light cylindrical metal rod lies across the rails, between the poles of a strong U-shaped magnet.
When the switch is closed, the rod
rolls
along the rails.
Conclusion
a straight conductor carrying current and placed perpendicular to a magnetic field experiences a magnetic force in a definite direction.
If the cell connections are reversed (so the current direction reverses), the force and movement reverse.
Reversing the magnet’s poles also reverses the direction of motion.
This force is the basis of the electric motor.
