Unit 1 — Chemical Reactions and Their Environmental Impacts

2.10 Summary of Lesson 2

2.10 Summary of Lesson 2

  • Combustion needs fuel, oxygen and heat (fire triangle).
  • Ignition point and flammability explain why some fuels burn more easily.
  • Metals give basic oxides, non-metals acidic oxides.
  • Complete combustion of a hydrocarbon gives CO₂ and H₂O; incomplete gives CO and/or soot, plus water, and releases less energy.
  • Products can be identified using cobalt chloride paper (water) and limewater (carbon dioxide).
  • Burning waste, vehicles and industry pollute the air; catalytic converters, scrubbers, clean fuel and renewable energy reduce pollution.
