What is a set and how to write it

What is a set and how to write it

  • A set is a collection of well-defined objects or numbers.
  • Each object in the set is called an element.
  • Sets are usually named with capital letters such as A, and their elements are written between braces { }.
  • There are three ways to write a set:

Descriptive (set-builder) methoddescribe the property the elements share
  • A = {x : x is an integer
  • 0 < x ≤ 4}

Venn diagramdraw a circle or a rectangle and place the elements inside. This is useful for operations—drawcirclerectangleplace

  • The order of the elements and their repetition do not matter. The set {1
  • 3} is the same as the set {3
