Organizing Data

Data and its types

Data and its types

  • Data are pieces of information collected about a phenomenon, such as students’ test scores or the heights of pupils in a class.
  • Data in the form in which they were collected are called raw data.
  • Raw data are usually unordered, so they must be organised to be read easily.
  • Data are of two kinds.
  • Numerical (quantitative) data are numbers we measure or count, such as heights and scores.
  • Descriptive (qualitative) data are qualities we cannot measure with numbers, such as the colour of a car or a favourite game.
