Algebraic Expressions and Formulas

Common mistakes

Common mistakes

  • Adding unlike terms. The wrong answer 3x + 2y = 5xy should not be written.
  • Forgetting to change the signs when removing a bracket preceded by a minus sign. The correct form of −(x − 4) is −x + 4.
  • Multiplying only the first term inside a bracket by the number in front of it.
  • Squaring a negative number wrongly when substituting. If x = −3, then x² = 9.
