Physical and chemical properties, and density

Comparison aspectMain ideaExampleKeywords
Physical propertiescan be observed or measured without changing the substance
  • colour
  • hardness
  • density
  • melting point
  • boiling point
  • and the ability to conduct electricity and heat
observedmeasuredwithoutchanging
Chemical propertiesappear when a reaction takes place and the substance turns into a new substance
  • iron rusting
  • wood burning
  • or a metal reacting with an acid

•Density is the mass of a unit volume of a substance—Densitymassunitvolume
Density = mass ÷ volumewith units g/cm³ or kg/m³—units
  • The density of water is about 1 g/cm³, which is 1000 kg/m³.
  • The density of ice is about 0.92 g/cm³, so ice floats on water.
  • Worked example a piece of a material has mass 500 g and volume 200 cm³. Density = 500 ÷ 200 = 2.5 g/cm³.
