Laws of Exponents

The laws of exponents

The laws of exponents

  1. Let a and b be non-zero real numbers
  2. and let m and n be integers. Then:
Law Example
am × an = am+n 23 × 24 = 27 = 128
am ÷ an = am−n 36 ÷ 32 = 34 = 81
(am)n = am×n (23)2 = 26 = 64
(a × b)n = an × bn (2 × 5)3 = 23 × 53 = 1000
Important note→the laws for multiplication and division require the same base. We cannot write 23 × 32 = 65, because the bases are different.
