Common mistakes

Common mistakes

  • Multiplying the exponents when multiplying powers. Writing 23 × 24 = 47 is wrong; the correct value is 27.
  • Confusing the base with the exponent. Writing 23 = 6 is wrong; the correct value is 8.
  • Treating a negative exponent as a negative number. Writing 2−3 = −8 is wrong; the correct value is 1/8.
  • Writing (a + b)n = an + bn. For example, (2 + 3)2 = 25, not 4 + 9 = 13.
