Medians of a Triangle

The centroid of a triangle

The centroid of a triangle

  • The three medians of any triangle meet at one point, called the centroid, usually written G.
  • This point divides each median in the ratio 2 : 1 counted from the vertex.
  • So the distance from the vertex to the centroid is two thirds of the median’s length, and the distance from the centroid to the midpoint of the side is one third.
Distance Fraction of the median’s length
From the vertex to the centroid Two thirds (2/3)
From the centroid to the midpoint of the side One third (1/3)
  1. If a median is 12 cm long
  2. the distance from the vertex to the centroid is 8 cm
  3. and the distance from the centroid to the midpoint is 4 cm.
