Advanced Measures of Dispersion

Effect of adding a constant or multiplying by a constant

Effect of adding a constant or multiplying by a constant

  1. If the new values are y = kx + b
  2. where k and b are fixed numbers
  3. then:
  • The new mean is ȳ = k x̄ + b.
  • The new standard deviation is σy = |k| × σx. Adding the number b does not change the spread, but multiplying the values by k multiplies the standard deviation by |k|.
  • The new variance is σ²y = k² × σ²x.
