Advanced Measures of Dispersion

Lesson summary

Lesson summary

  • Range = largest value − smallest value.
  • Variance σ² = Σ(x − x̄)² ÷ n, and standard deviation σ = √σ².
  • For a frequency table σ² = Σ(f × (x − x̄)²) ÷ Σf, and class midpoints are used in place of the values.
  • Coefficient of variation = (σ ÷ x̄) × 100%, used for relative comparison.
  • Adding a constant changes the mean but not σ. Multiplying the values by k multiplies σ by |k|.
