Effect of adding a constant or multiplying by a constant
Effect of adding a constant or multiplying by a constant
If the new values are y = kx + b
where k and b are fixed numbers
then:
The new mean is ȳ = k x̄ + b.
The new standard deviation is σy = |k| × σx. Adding the number b does not change the spread, but multiplying the values by k multiplies the standard deviation by |k|.
The new variance is σ²y = k² × σ²x.
