Unit 4 — Dating Planet Earth
Choosing a dating method
Choosing a dating method
- If you are asked "which rock is older?" or "arrange the layers", use relative dating.
- If you are asked "how many years ago?", use absolute (radiometric) dating: count the half-lives.
- Use carbon-14 for remains of once-living things younger than about 50 000 years; use isotopes with very long half-lives, such as uranium-238, for very old rocks.
