Part 4 of 7Process & sequence
Drawing a motion diagram and particle modelwrite these steps in this order; each step is a marking point.
Part 5 of 7Worked examples
- Distance = 300 + 120 = 420 m.
- Taking east as positive, displacement = +300 + (−120) = +180 m, i.e. 180 m east.
- Magnitude = √(302 + 402) = √(900 + 1600) = √2500 = 50 m.
- Direction: tan θ = 40/30, θ = 53° east of north (N53°E).
A car is at x = −4.0 m at t = 2.0 s and x = +11.0 m at t = 5.0 s. Find Δx and Δt.
- Δx = 11.0 − (−4.0) = +15.0 m (15.0 m in positive direction). Δt = 5.0 − 2.0 = 3.0 s.

Q1. Which is a vector quantity?
- A. Distance
- B. Speed
- C. Displacement
- D. Time
Show answer
C. Displacement has magnitude and direction.
Q2. A swimmer completes 2 lengths of a 50 m pool, ending where she started. Her displacement is
- A. 0 m
- B. 50 m
- C. 100 m
- D. 200 m
Show answer
A. She returns to the start, so the change in position is zero.
Q3. An object moves from x = 6 m to x = −2 m. Its displacement is
- A. +8 m
- B. −8 m
- C. +4 m
- D. −4 m
Show answer
B. Δx = −2 − 6 = −8 m.
Q4. In a motion diagram the dots become further apart. The object is
- A. at rest
- B. moving at constant speed
- C. speeding up
- D. slowing down
Show answer
C. Greater distance per equal time interval means increasing speed.
Q5. 6 m east plus 8 m north has a resultant of magnitude
- A. 2 m
- B. 7 m
- C. 10 m
- D. 14 m
Show answer
C. √(36 + 64) = 10 m.
Q6. The point where position is zero in a coordinate system is the
- A. resultant
- B. origin
- C. vector
- D. interval
Show answer
B. The origin is the zero point.
