To add or subtract two fractions, we make the denominators equal using the least common multiple, then add or subtract the numerators and keep the common denominator.
For example:
2/3 + 3/4 = 8/12 + 9/12 = 17/12
5/6 − 1/4 = 10/12 − 3/12 = 7/12
When adding a negative rational number
we apply the same rules as for integers to the numerators.
