Intervals and Operations on Them

Solving an inequality and writing the answer as an interval

Solving an inequality and writing the answer as an interval

  • A linear inequality such as 1 ≤ 2x − 3 < 7 is solved in steps similar to those for an equation, with care about its direction.
  • Add 3 to all three parts, then divide by 2, to get 2 ≤ x < 5.
  • The solution is written as the interval [2, 5).
