Intervals and Operations on Them

What an interval is and its types

What an interval is and its types

  • An interval is a subset of the real numbers R.
  • It contains all the numbers between two given numbers, called the endpoints.
  • The endpoints are written from the smaller to the larger.
Interval Name Numbers it contains
[a, b] Closed interval
  • All numbers from a to b
  • including both a and b
(a, b) Open interval
  • All numbers between a and b
  • excluding both endpoints
[a, b) Half-open interval Includes a but does not include b
  • A square bracket [ or ] is used when the endpoint is included, and a round bracket ( or ) is used when it is not.
  • For example, [2, 5] contains 2 and 5, while (2, 5) contains neither.
