Operations on intervals

Operations on intervals

  1. Intervals are sets
  2. so we apply the operations of sets to them:
  • Union (∪) the set of numbers that belong to at least one of the two intervals.
  • Intersection (∩) the set of numbers that belong to both intervals.
  • Difference (−) the set of numbers that belong to the first interval but not to the second.
  • Shading on the number line helps a lot.
  • Shade the first interval, then the second, and identify the required part.
  • A included endpoint is shown as a solid dot, and an excluded endpoint is shown as an open dot.
