Volume of the Right Pyramid and Cone
Explanation
Practice
Volume of a pyramid
Volume of a pyramid
The volume of a pyramid is one third of the volume of the prism that has the same base and the same height. Therefore:
Volume of a pyramid = ⅓ × area of the base × height
For a triangular base, this can be seen by dividing a triangular prism of the same base and height into three pyramids of equal volume.
The height used in the volume rule is the perpendicular height h, not the slant height l.
The unit of volume is a cubic unit of length, such as cm³ or m³.
