Equation of a Circle

Position of a point relative to a circle

Position of a point relative to a circle

  • To find the position of the point (x1, y1) relative to the circle with centre (h, k) and radius r, we compare the square of the distance from the point to the centre with r²:
Condition Position of the point
(x1 − h)² + (y1 − k)² < r² Inside the circle
(x1 − h)² + (y1 − k)² = r² On the circle
(x1 − h)² + (y1 − k)² > r² Outside the circle
