Adding two integers with the same sign
- Add the absolute values and keep the common sign. For example
- (−7) + (−5) = −(7 + 5) = −12.
Adding two integers with different signs
- Subtract the smaller absolute value from the larger one, and take the sign of the number with the larger absolute value.
- For example, (−9) + 14 = 14 − 9 = 5, because 14 has the larger absolute value.
Subtraction
Subtracting a number means adding its additive inverse→a − b = a + (−b). For example, 6 − (−4) = 6 + 4 = 10. Remember that subtracting a negative number becomes addition.
