Operations on Integers
Explanation
Common mistakes
Common mistakes
Getting the sign of the product wrong. Negative × negative gives a positive result, not a negative one.
Forgetting that subtracting a negative number means adding. Writing 6 − (−4) = 2 instead of 10 is a common error.
Confusing (−3)² with −3². The first equals 9 and the second equals −9, because the power applies only to 3 in the second case.
Adding or subtracting before multiplying or dividing when evaluating an expression.
