Formation of Minerals and Soil
Explanation
Lesson summary
Lesson summary
A mineral is a natural, inorganic, solid substance with a fixed chemical composition and a crystal structure.
Minerals form by crystallisation from magma, by evaporation of solutions, and by deposition from hot solutions.
Mohs’ scale ranks minerals by hardness from 1 to 10.
Soil is a loose surface layer made of broken rock, organic matter, water, air and living organisms.
The fertility of soil depends on the proportions of sand, silt and clay, and on the amount of organic matter.
