Equilibrium of a Rigid Body under Coplanar Forces

Applied Mathematics — Second Secondary

Equilibrium of a Rigid Body under Coplanar Forces

Lesson summary

Lesson summary

  • A body is in equilibrium when it is at rest or moves with constant velocity, and the resultant of the forces on it is zero.
  • For coplanar concurrent forces, the conditions are ΣX = 0 and ΣY = 0.
  • Draw the force diagram, resolve the forces into components, write the two equations and solve them.
  • If three forces alone keep a body in equilibrium, they form a closed triangle when drawn head to tail.
