Aerobic respiration and where it happens
Aerobic respiration and where it happens
Aerobic respiration takes place in the mitochondria in the presence of oxygen. Its equation is:
C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂ → 6CO₂ + 6H₂O + energy
This process releases about 2800 kJ per mole of glucose.
A large part of this energy is stored in molecules of ATP, which supply the cell with energy when it is needed.
The process happens in stages.
It starts with the breakdown of glucose in the cytoplasm and is completed inside the mitochondria with the use of oxygen.
