Cellular Respiration

Lesson summary

Lesson summary

  • Cellular respiration is the oxidation of food inside the cell to release energy.
  • Aerobic respiration takes place in the mitochondria in the presence of oxygen: C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂ → 6CO₂ + 6H₂O + energy.
  • Anaerobic respiration takes place without oxygen and releases less energy. It includes fermentation by yeast and lactic acid formation in muscles.
  • Cellular respiration reverses the equation of photosynthesis, and the two processes together cycle matter and energy.
