Applied Mathematics — Second Secondary

Resultant of Coplanar Concurrent Forces

Lesson summary

Lesson summary

  • The resultant of concurrent coplanar forces is a single force with the same effect as the whole set of forces.
  • Add the horizontal components to get ΣX, and add the vertical components to get ΣY.
  • Magnitude of the resultant R = √((ΣX)² + (ΣY)²), and direction: tan θ = ΣY ÷ ΣX.
  • If ΣX = 0 and ΣY = 0, the resultant is zero.
