Resultant of Coplanar Concurrent Forces

The idea of a resultant

The idea of a resultant

  • Coplanar concurrent forces are forces acting in one plane whose lines of action all pass through one point.
  • The resultant is a single force that has the same effect on the body as the whole set of forces.
  • If the resultant is zero, the body is in equilibrium.
  • To find the resultant we use the method of components we resolve each force into a horizontal and a vertical component, then add all the horizontal components together and all the vertical components together. This gives the two components of the resultant.
