Discrete Random Variables

Probabilities of events related to the variable

Probabilities of events related to the variable

  • We find the probability of any event about the variable by adding the probabilities of the values included in it. For example:
  • P(X ≤ a) = the sum of f(x) for all values x that are less than or equal to a.
  • P(X ≥ a) = the sum of f(x) for all values x that are greater than or equal to a.
  • P(a ≤ X < b) = the sum of f(x) for all values x with a ≤ x < b, so b is not included.
  • It helps to list the values included in the event on a separate line before adding, so that no value is missed or added twice.
