Discrete Random Variables

Probability distribution and its conditions

Probability distribution and its conditions

  • The probability distribution of a discrete random variable is a table or a rule that shows each value x of X and its probability f(x) = P(X = x).
  • For the table to be a valid probability distribution, two conditions must hold:
  1. Each probability satisfies 0 ≤ f(x) ≤ 1.
  2. Σ f(x) = 1.
  1. If the second condition is not satisfied
  2. the table is wrong and the calculation must be checked.
