Discrete Random Variables

Random variables and their range

Random variables and their range

  • A random variable is a function that assigns exactly one real number to each outcome of a random experiment.
  • It is usually denoted by the capital letter X, and its values by the small letter x.
  • For example, if two coins are tossed and X is the number of heads, then X takes the values 0, 1 or 2.
  • The range of a random variable is the set of all values it can take.
  • The variable is discrete when its range is a set of separate values that can be counted, such as 0, 1, 2, 3.
  • Otherwise it is continuous.
