Discrete Random Variables

Finding an unknown constant in a distribution

Finding an unknown constant in a distribution

  • Sometimes a question gives a distribution with an unknown value.
  • We use the condition that the probabilities add up to 1 to find it.
  • For example, if the probabilities are 0.1, a, 0.3 and 0.2, then 0.1 + a + 0.3 + 0.2 = 1, so a = 0.4.
  • This method appears in many exam questions.
